1460's it was Portugal's goal to round the southern tip of Africa

From the early fifteenth century, Henry the Navigator and his followers had been increasing Portuguese knowledge of the African coastline. From the 1460's, it was Portugal's goal to round the southern tip of Africa to gain access totally by sea to the riches of India (mainly black pepper and other spices).

The Republic of Venice had gained control over much of the trade routes between Europe and Asia. These trade routes were a mixture of land routes and sea routes. Portugal hoped to break the Venetian trading monopoly by establishing a route totally by sea.

It remained for a Portugese explorer, Vasco da Gama (died 1524), to discover a trade route totally by sea into the Indian Ocean.

Following Vasco da Gama's initial voyage, the Portuguese crown took steps to secure military outposts on the eastern coast of Africa to protect their shipping. These outposts provided a foothold for subsequent colonization.
